Our Evolution

Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

When we are all united in HOPE and take action to create something good together, great things happen.  With this understanding, Mayor James Baker issued an Executive Order in May 2005, which created the Wilmington HOPE Commission.

Our Charge: Look at serious issues facing our City and develop a report with recommendations that address these issues and give us a way to make our City safer and more dynamic.

Our First Step: The HOPE Commission’s steering committee and more than 100 community members worked together to collect and study information about public safety, community services, faith-based and educational programs, economic and employment opportunity, and the cultural life of Wilmington’s underserved communities.

Our Report and Recommendations: . The HOPE Commission’s Report was completed in less than a year. It includes nine recommendations that, when combined, provide a clear path forward for creating safer, stronger communities within the City of Wilmington.
